Summertime | A Look Back

Kristin Aytona Summer Recap Beachin

I always hesitate to see summer bid adieu. But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end?  At least we have the next one to look forward to!!!

I indefinitely took more photos this summer than I have in an entire year span – no joke – which says a lot because my friends and colleagues know that I’m always taking photos no matter the season. It’s either they want me to “put the camera down” lol, or “take a picture.” But being able to look back at all these moments makes me very happy.  Photography is literally physical therapy for me and it makes me open my eyes and heart that much more, it makes me better.  Not in the sense that I get better and better at taking pics, as in it is a vehicle for allowing me to experience (I know others would assume the opposite), but it’s how I see and feel the moment; it’s visceral, playful, creative, expressive, internal, external, eternal, it’s one of my favorite hobbies no matter how crap or non-crap I am at it?  Anyways, there is no way to share every single moment, nor would I subject you to THAT many pics, so I picked 20 at random  to share. I find it fitting, as that is the perfect word to round up my summer, R A N D O M – and I loved it.  So here’s my arbitrary look back, and enthusiastic cheers to what’s ahead…

THANK YOU to those who let me be weird and do my own thing. And THANK YOU to those who find it interesting enough to look at.

Your Everyday Object

I found this pic that I took at Numero 28 in the West Village (delish bruschetta btw). I remember how hungryyyyyy I was, so much that I started playing with the objects in front of me for my own entertainment — empty plate canvas, steak knife, a little Pinot Noir and voila — one hungry girl and her poorly makeshift shark masterpiece.  Going through my backlog of restaurant pics it’s very apparent that I like to play with my food; simple everyday objects.  Tomato and a straw. Pickles and toothpicks.  Etc Etc.

And then I found THIS guy (via Mashable).

“Artist Brock Davis doesn’t just rely on pen and paper to manifest his wit.  From fruits and veggies to googly eyes, the mediums that make up his extensive portfolio are endless.  One of his ongoing projects turns everyday objects into mini scenes and concepts. The photos are captured simply with his iPhone.

“Most of my friends were sharing photos of their kids and pets, which is cool, but almost immediately I was curious if it would be possible to take conceptual photos with my iPhone while staying true to the immediacy and spontaneity that is inherent with mobile photography,” Davis told Mashable.

Using an iPhone and Instagram, Davis enjoys being able to execute the process quickly, and maintain the candidness of both the image and idea. He often uses ambient, simple backgrounds, so the concept isn’t competing with busy elements.

“I always try to keep things simple and let the idea take precedence,” he says.””

My shark knife pretty much pales in comparison to his version.  He is literally creating foodporn for the eyes in the most minimalistic and crisp fashion.  Food, reimagined…I’m a fan!  Brock, can we grab lunch sometime???!!

I even love his (nonfood) creations.

The Simple Things

Kristin Aytona Rainbow copy

I woke up this morning and found the teeny teeny teeny tiniest rainbow bouncing off a vase that sits next to my window sill.  I must have spent ages staring at it.  And then taking pictures of it (of course).  My friend got so bored of watching me that she literally left the building (I kid I kid – she did have to run and do work stuff, although she knows how silent I get when I’m in this bubble).  Anyways, I stared some more.  And then some more.  The little things.  The simple things.  They stop me in my tracks and time stands still.  We tend to overlook these things especially living in NYC, but I’ll tell you what — the secret to staying sane amidst all the activity in this city is to stop and enjoy the little things (whatever that personally means to you).  I’m constantly reminded of this by my dog.  There are 2 types of walks I can have with him.  One where I am in a rush and I have to take him out and we have just a window of time and my mind is already on the next thing I/we have to do.  And there is the kind where I am completely present with him, observing his every move, watching the wheels turn in his head as he wags his tail with every bounce in his step.  He is such a curious little dog, he loves to stop, discover, and take his time with every inch and corner, finding “little rainbows” every where he looks.  Even when we’re just chilling at home the littlest things get him excited or keep him completely content, it’s adorable and makes my heart melt.

I’m not really sure there is a ground breaking point to this blog post at all.  It’s a simple post, really.  Maybe that’s why I felt compelled to stop and share it.

Happy Friday, everyone.

#MakeItGraphic | Series 4 – The Ghost Ninja

Hello, hello.  Happy to be back with another #MakeItGraphic Series:  the G H O S T  N I N J A.  Lol.

So both Skyler and I are the proud mommas of our pups;  “Ghost,” Skyler’s super intelligent and strikingly beautiful Australian Shepherd, and “Ninja,” my pint-sized Morkie mix with big brown eyes and an even bigger personality.  There’s a funny connotation when you mix their 2 names together so we went with that theme.  I love the color palette & textures of Skyler’s images. Creepy in the most beautiful way, just like I like it!

Skyler’s GHOST:

“we couldn’t get into the cemetery / it was up a pretty steep hill and we are pretty sure it was in someones yard – who probably owns a gun.

so holy ghost is walking on water, like freak show.”

I woke up one morning with Ninja poised up on my chest, staring with intense laser focused silence.  Adorable but creepy when you’re just opening your eyes for the day.  So I went with that — the adorable creep Ninja who appears in and out like a ghost. Please note, my dog is my favorite thing on earth. He can creep all he wants 🙂

I could’ve stayed up all night making gifs of my dog, but alas…the work day beckons.  Enjoy.

Ninja likes to play and be all up in your face, literally.  So when the apartment goes silent, it makes me wonder what he’s up to.  I’ll turn around and see this little face staring at me.  Laser focus.

#MakeItGraphic | Series 2 – Vector Vibes

I am VERY excited about this next #MakeItGraphic theme, “Vector Vibes.”  Before we get into it, I want to thank all those who checked out #MakeItGraphic | Series 1 – iPhoneography.

All (digital) illustrators know a lot can be achieved with the mighty little pen tool.  I admit when I first learned how to use it way back when I was not the most elegant.  But now I really enjoy the creative problem solving that comes with the technique — the more you use it the more fun results it yields.  When I first typed the word ‘Vibes’ I automatically thought of surfing.  I then knew I wanted to design prints on a surfboard but the main question was what.  The first thing that popped into mind was a gun, but because I don’t promote negative implications linked to them I went the cheeky route.  Yes, I know I can be slightly weird, sometimes mistaken for quirky?,  but I’m definitely nuts, and I am totally OK with that.  Life’s more fun with a sense of humor spliced with ridiculousness.  Having said that, I hope you like this series!

I get asked this question a lot. The way I explain it is, make this $hit as $&@ %#*^ big as you want because it’s like the fricking energizer bunny.
